Memoir Snippet #1

A memory most seniors will relate to!

As an author, I enjoy attending writing groups and circles. I meet many enthusiastic writers who love their craft. Promoting one’s work is tougher than the writing itself, but, despite the many drawbacks, most memoir writers have both sad and hilarious stores to tell. I’m not sure this memoir snippet would be considered hilarious but it might bring a smile to your face, especially if you wear glasses. It is a piece I wrote after returning home from a recent writing circle. Frustrated over what happened while attending, I decided to turn it into a laugh.

Memoir Snippet #1

Where are my glasses?

Where are my glasses?

Our writers’ circle gathered around the table with pens and paper at hand. All eyes turned to the teacher. Striving to get us writing, she displayed a large photograph. “My husband is the photographer,” she proudly announced. “But this session is not about him. It is about you. Getting you writing. So, look at this photo and write down the first thing you see.”

I reached in my purse for my reading glasses. As I rifled through its contents, my heart fluttered. Where are my glasses? Darn it! I forgot to bring them! I stare hard at the photo, but it’s a blur. I see shadowy, colorful objects but little else.

Our teacher continued. “What do you see; an object, a landscape, an event?”

I try to focus. There appears to be something hanging from sticks. Is it water? Yes, I’ll write water. Oh no, here comes a second photo and I see even less. Lot’s of pink, I get that, but what is the subject?” Glancing discreetly to the floor where my purse now sits open, I pray my glasses will glint back at me.

“And how about this photo?” she asks. She puts down the pink photo and raises the next. “What do you see?”

I glance around the table. All I see is the group furiously writing their answers. I stare at the new photo. There is a lot of orange, but I can’t make out the scene. I’ll write orange. After all, orange is the first thing I see, so orange it will be. For several agonizing minutes my ordeal continues. For each photo, I write a color. Purple… blue… green; darn it, how could I have forgotten my glasses?

Fifteen photos later and it is answer time. “I’m sure your answers are diverse,” the teacher says. “Who wants to share what they wrote?”

Not me. I shrink back in my chair and think. I need to appear I am not interested in sharing. I glance at the table and see my coffee. A long, slow sip will cover my disinterest, but as I reach for the cup, something from behind glints at me. It is my glasses! I must have laid them on the table when I first arrived. Darn it!

Well, I hope that snippet made for a giggle. You might also giggle over Rosie’s antics. She is a secondary character in my seaside series, titled, Under the Shanklin Sky. The daughter of my main character, Milly, she exudes obnoxiousness, especially toward seniors. Milly and Rosie’s adventures can be found in Under the Shanklin Sky, The Bathing Beauty, The Faring Foxglove, and my soon to be published, A Hint of Spring

Another of my Passions!

Studying Parables and Prophecy

Apart from writing books, and learning how to paint, another of my passions is studying the Bible, especially parables and prophecy, so, a few years back, I began a lineage chart connecting all the people mentioned in the Old Testament from God to Jesus. With all those “begat” connections, it took me over six months to complete the chart which finally filled thirty-one Word pages and, when pinned on my wall, was almost twelve feet wide by four feet high.

I have no idea how to print it out as one poster, but want to share it with others, so I am now attempting to minimize the whole chart onto a Word PDF to allow readers to zoom to their area of interest.

Here is a photo of how it looks pinned to my bedroom wall. It’s so long, it stretches along the wall and around the door, but I couldn’t get the whole thing in the photo. Wish me luck fitting it all onto a PDF! Or, if you know of an easier way, please contact me.

I’m not sure how long it will take me to minimize it, but, in the meantime, why not check out my ebooks on Amazon!

My Author Site

Welcome to my new author site, barbara studham dot com. At the moment it is a work in progress, but here you will find a list of my memoirs, fiction, and non-fiction.

Please see the menu bar for more information and in-depth descriptions of my books.

Memoirs: My memoirs include Two Decades Of Diapers, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: The Teen Years. Both books describe the twenty years of challenges and struggles I faced while raising four grandchildren with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. My third memoir, Psychopathetic, highlights the emotional violence I experienced during a five-year abusive relationship.

Fiction: My stand-alone stories include, Friday at 4:00, The Look of a Twelve-Year-Old, and, Not My Type. All relate to the daily deluge of dilemmas woman face during their lives. Some are challenged by age-gap relationships, infidelity, ageism, and marital boredom, while others face more intense trials and come out fighting! Nevertheless, all women will relate to the stories because every woman has a story to tell.

Fiction Series #1: Under The Shanklin Sky.  Milly Mullan is a retiree from London with delightful childhood memories of holidays spent at the seaside town of Shanklin, located on the Isle of Wight. As an adult, she intended to vacation there often but with a successful career as an interior designer to oversee, and hubby being top chef at a popular up-scale London restaurant, time to holiday was denied them. Not until retired, did Milly return to Shanklin, by which time Harry had died from health complications and their daughter, Rosie, had grown up and married. Milly has wonderful adventures Under The Shanklin Sky, and returns for more in the next two books in the series, titled, The Faring Foxglove, and, The Bathing Beauty.

Fiction Series #2: I, Gossip. James Gossip is the main character in my series: I, Gossip. James is different from my other main characters because he is male, whereas, to date, my main characters have been female. While going about his everyday business he is caught up in a strange wave of demonstrations against a government threat called, Project Abaddon. Not sure, he should get involved, his gut tells him to take a stand, join in the protests, and steadfastly face this new threat to the lives of Christians worldwide. He returns in, The Hugger-Mugger Heart for another adventure with his One Road Ministries team.

Non-Fiction in progress: A Time To LieWhen an individual first receives salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ, he or she is full of joy and so embarks on a study of the Bible. But, it doesn’t take long for the new convert to realize that the Bible is a very complex book requiring years of study which many Christians find difficult to endure. So they tend to close their Bible and walk away. They might still love Jesus, but are not sure why. It was for this reason, I began an in-depth Bible study until verses came together and heightened my understanding of God. In A Time to Lie, I share my significant findings with readers.
